Bird nesting in chimney?
The Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 protects wild birds, their eggs and their nests. So you can't sweep the chimney, nor fit a cowling until the birds have vacated your chimney. The same applies for bees, although we recommend you contact a local bee keeper to rehome the bees before contacting a pest removal company.
As it takes around a month for the Jackdaw fledglings to leave the nest, the safest time to remove a nest from the chimney is August time. After this, we can fit a cowling for you.
You will need a chimney sweep to remove the nest. This can take several hours even for a small fireplace. It's amazing how many twigs the birds can pop in your chimney.

Permanent Capping
If you no use for your chimney ( maybe you have had all the fireplaces removed ) then we can remove all your chimney pots and permanently cap off with slate and flaunching. This should make sure that no rain gets in and also saves you any future maintenance on your chimney pots, which often become loose and are much bigger and heavier than you would expect.
Chimney RemovalAlternatively, you could remove the chimney down to ridge height and have the top flaunched off, which would save you on future maintenance costs of the chimney pots. Always remember when thinking about removing a fireplace that the internal chimney stack is needed to support the chimney stack and pots at the top and MUST be supported if not fully removed. |
Chimney Re-pointing
Is the cement between your bricks missing? This can indicate that your satck is losing integrity and will need maintenance before too long. If you have a lot of gaps in your brickwork, you may need it loooking at sooner rather than later.
This kind of work is almost impossible to undertake in the winter time and rainy months, as cement tends to get washed away and ice forms in the mixture if it's under 3 degrees in temperature.
You may also need scaffolding to do this work, so you may want to look at other issues that scaffolding can help with e.g. roof repairs, gutter cleaning, aerial removal, render / soffits re-painting.

Chimney Re-fitting
A broken or loose chimney pot may fall or be blown over in a storm, and cause damage to yours or your neighbours' property. This could also indicate a larger problem on your roof. A missing chimney pot will reduce the draw of air for your fire and will stop it burning properly, it will also create an attractive entrance to your stack, for wildlife and allow rain to enter your property.
We can re-fit your pot for you and permanently cap off or fit a new one if the existing is not in good condition. We could also repoint or fit a cowl whilst we are up there.
We have public liability insurance to protect us should the chimney pot fall whilst we are up on your roof but it is the property owner's responsibility to keep the chimney and stack in a good state of repair so as not to injure pedestrians passing by or guests to the property, including vehicles that might be parked outside.
